Volatile Oil Markets

How we help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The ongoing war involving Iran continues to send shockwaves through global energy markets, with serious implications for everyday households especially those reliant on oil for heating. Since the conflict escalated, oil prices have surged sharply as supply routes like the Strait of Hormuz face disruption and attacks on regional energy infrastructure push prices higher. Brent crude and other benchmarks have climbed well above recent norms, driving fuel and heating costs upwards across Europe and the UK.

In the UK, the impact has been stark. Rural households that depend on heating oil  a fuel not covered by Ofgem’s energy price cap are facing dramatic cost increases. Many homeowners report prices nearly tripling in recent weeks, leaving families with much higher bills and, in some cases, cancelled deliveries as suppliers struggle to cope with volatile markets.

This volatility highlights a broader challenge: fossil fuel dependence leaves homeowners exposed not just to seasonal price rises, but to geopolitical instability half a world away. As inflationary pressure mounts and energy costs feed into broader living expenses, many advocates and experts argue that accelerating the transition to renewable-based home heating isn’t just environmentally sensible it’s financially prudent.

One practical solution gaining traction is the installation of air source heat pumps, which offer a low-carbon alternative to traditional oil and gas heating systems. Heat pumps extract heat from the air outside your home to warm radiators and hot water and are typically 3–4 times more efficient than conventional boilers. When paired with electricity from clean sources, they can significantly reduce both carbon emissions and household energy costs.

To make the switch more affordable, the UK government currently offers substantial support through schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Under BUS, eligible homeowners can receive £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump installation in England and Wales, greatly lowering the upfront cost of renewable heating. Additionally, the ECO4 scheme can, for eligible households, cover 100% of the cost of a heat pump installation along with other improvements such as insulation and solar panels, helping shield homes from future price shocks in global fossil fuel markets.

With energy prices still unstable and heating bills rising for many, now is a pivotal moment for homeowners to consider future‑proofing their heating systems.
